For more than a week, the Indian Ocean country has been battered by torrential monsoon rains that have flooded homes, farmland, and roadways.

Five people were killed and five others were injured after a huge tree fell on a moving bus in Colombo on Friday, according to Dr. Rukshan Bellana, a spokesman for the city’s primary hospital.

Separately, the state-run Disaster Management Centre said that one person perished after a boulder collapsed on his home during a mudslide in Galle district, roughly 130 kilometers south of Colombo.

According to the center, more than 50,000 people were impacted by the floods and mudslides, including 1,473 families who were relocated to temporary shelters, and hundreds of homes were destroyed in 12 districts.

The worst-affected area was Matara’s coastline district, where the majority of the area remained under water for more than a week. Due to flooding and the potential for landslides, schools in Matara were closed on Friday.
