Japan will launch the SLIM Lander on Monday and make a precise Moon landing

Japan is getting ready to launch its own ambitious lunar mission just after India successfully landed Chandrayaan-3 on the southern polar region of the Moon. The “Smart Lander for Investigating the Moon” or SLIM lander mission has acquired the moniker “Moon Sniper” for its outstanding precision and accuracy in landing.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-150538″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-japan-will-launch-the-slim-lander-on-monday-and-make-a-precise-moon-landing-download-2023-08-28t180533.491-11zon.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com japan will launch the slim lander on monday and make a precise moon landing download 2023 08 28t180533.491 11zon” width=”1219″ height=”811″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-japan-will-launch-the-slim-lander-on-monday-and-make-a-precise-moon-landing-download-2023-08-28t180533.491-11zon.jpg 275w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-japan-will-launch-the-slim-lander-on-monday-and-make-a-precise-moon-landing-download-2023-08-28t180533.491-11zon-150×100.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1219px) 100vw, 1219px” title=”Japan will launch the SLIM Lander on Monday and make a precise Moon landing 3″>

The SLIM project (Smart Lander for Investigating Moon) is being worked on by the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). It will be crucial for prospective lunar missions to develop a compact, light-weight probe that can land on the Moon with extreme precision.

Pinpoint Landing: What is it?

On a space object with gravity, such as the Moon, pinpoint landing refers to the transition from just landing anywhere we can to really landing where we want to be. SLIM’s main goal is to attain pinpoint precision in its landings, in contrast to conventional techniques that sought to land spacecraft anywhere it was practicable.

This is a substantial development, particularly when taking into account astronomical entities like the Moon that are subject to gravitational pull. The mission’s objective is no longer merely to land anywhere it is possible, but rather to switch to a new paradigm that will allow landings to be carefully targeted at certain areas.

The gravity of the Moon is only roughly one-sixth as powerful as that of the Earth. This makes spaceship landing there challenging. However, by employing more advanced satellites, telescopes, and high-definition images, researchers have learned more about the Moon’s surface and its composition.

Knowing about the Moon is crucial, especially because water may be found there, particularly near the south pole. Additionally, mastering precise landings enables us to reach certain locations, such as particular nice rocks, that we want to explore.

Typical lunar landings by spacecraft aren’t extremely precise; they may occur several to hundreds of kilometers off-course. But what makes this Slim spacecraft remarkable is that it intends to land within 100 meters from its intended location.

SLIM lander information:

Slim is a compact and lightweight spacecraft with dimensions of 2.4 by 1.7 by 2.7 meters and a weight of roughly 200 kg. It is now simpler to send it on additional spacecraft missions to other locations. Radar and cameras are among the equipment it possesses to assist it locate itself and stabilize its position during landing.

Slim will use a specialized camera to examine the Moon rocks and determine their composition once it has arrived there. Additionally, a little robot by the name of SORA-Q will emerge from Slim and do some brief exploration.

At 9:26 a.m. on Monday, Slim will officially debut in Japan. Before approaching the Moon, it will travel for three to four months. Then the Moon landings will begin after another month or so. For Japan, this is a huge matter since their previous attempts at doing this ran into some difficulties. With Slim, they are trying once again.

The Slim mission demonstrates Japan’s genuine desire to explore space and improve its Moon landing techniques. This time, they are using a clever spaceship that ought to arrive at the ideal location.
