Researchers at IIT Guwahati Find Modified Graphene Oxide Used in Biomedical Applications

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati’s researchers have created accessible experiments for altering graphene oxide that other educational establishments can utilize to train staff for innovative projects in quantum, nanoelectronics, semiconductors, and healthcare. These significant findings on the use of modified graphene oxide for biomedical applications have been produced by a team under the direction of assistant professor Rajiv K Kar at the Jyoti and Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology at IIT-Guwahati, according to a release issued on Tuesday.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-273997″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-indias-luxury-home-sales-rise-97-yoy-from-january-to-september-2023-report-downloa.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com indias luxury home sales rise 97 yoy from january to september 2023 report downloa” width=”1298″ height=”649″ title=”Researchers at IIT Guwahati Find Modified Graphene Oxide Used in Biomedical Applications 3″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-indias-luxury-home-sales-rise-97-yoy-from-january-to-september-2023-report-downloa.jpg 318w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/theindiaprint.com-indias-luxury-home-sales-rise-97-yoy-from-january-to-september-2023-report-downloa-150×75.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1298px) 100vw, 1298px” />

Graphene is a material with remarkable strength and electrical and thermal conductivity. Its oxidized form, known as graphene oxide (GO), is appropriate for use in medicine because it has a huge surface area and less cytotoxicity. To increase its optical and electrical qualities for use in biological sensing applications, GO may be further modified via flaws, doping, and functional changes.

According to the announcement, the IIT-Guwahati researchers are concentrating on a particular functional modification of graphene that involves the attachment of an amino acid, such as cysteine or a simple amine group, over grapheme. Kar discussed the functionalized graphene oxide, saying, “We investigated the liquid behavior of amino acid-modified graphene oxide. It has been shown that a specific connection in Cys-GO sheets improves their stability by decreasing random movements. The discovery of biomarkers for illness detection may benefit from this study. The team’s in-depth understanding of graphene-based materials has resulted in the creation of creative lab exercises intended to provide students practical experience and motivate them to investigate the potential of cutting-edge materials.

According to the statement, the Jyoti and Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology is incorporating these investigations into a Biomedical Science and Engineering (BMSE) course. “These low-cost laboratory experiments are applicable also to chemical, material science, nanotechnology, and interdisciplinary courses,” Kar added in reference to the ground-breaking course. We think these methods will support the practical skill-building process and encourage aspiring scientists and researchers to come up with novel solutions in the area of biomedical science and engineering. The study results were published in an article written by Kar and his research associates, Rajan Singh, Shweta Tiwari, and Jyotirekha Jena, in the journals Journal of Chemical Education and The Journal of Physical Chemistry C.

According to the statement, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, has provided funding for the study via the Indian Nanoelectronics Users Programme and the Indian Council of Medical study.
