Because of the workers’ strike, thousands of students in Telangana miss their midday meals

The delivery of mid-day meals to thousands of school kids in Telangana continues to be impacted by the continuing strike by more than 54,000 MDM employees who want their demands met promptly. Wednesday marks the start of the strike’s third day.

The District Education Officers (DEO) have been urged to make other arrangements to ensure that the kids’ access to food is not hampered, according to a senior official of the Education Department, who expressed the hope that the strike will end within a day or two.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-73942″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-because-of-the-workers-strike-thousands-of-students-in-telangana-miss-their-midday-meals-download-2023-07-13t182645.685.jpg” alt=”” width=”1182″ height=”709″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-because-of-the-workers-strike-thousands-of-students-in-telangana-miss-their-midday-meals-download-2023-07-13t182645.685.jpg 290w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-because-of-the-workers-strike-thousands-of-students-in-telangana-miss-their-midday-meals-download-2023-07-13t182645.685-150×90.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1182px) 100vw, 1182px” />

Among other things, MDM employees have been requesting that the state government pay all outstanding debts and begin promptly implementing the raise in pay.

The honorarium amount was increased by the state government in February of this year from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000. The MDL employees, however, claim that they have not yet received the additional remuneration.

“Of the 23 lakh kids enrolled in government, Zilla parishad, and aided schools, 75–80 percent have lunch in the classroom. The DEOs have been instructed to come up with alternative plans to ensure that the pupils eat. For local considerations, arrangements couldn’t be made in other locations, the source told PTI.

According to him, the state’s 27,000 schools provide midday meals.

The workers’ union, according to AITUC Telangana Secretary T Sammaiah, has called for “Chalo Hyderabad” tomorrow as a form of protest.

The next line of action would depend on the state government’s response, Sammaiah added. “We are going to submit a memorandum to the state government.”
