Agenda-driven majoritarian government cannot impose the uniform civil code on the populace, says Chidambaram

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a compelling case for the creation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Congressman P Chidambaram said that such a law cannot be imposed by a “agenda-driven majoritarian government” since doing so would “widen divisions” within society.

The prime minister, according to the former Union minister, was pushing for UCC to draw attention away from the problems of unemployment, rising prices, and hate crimes. Additionally, he said that the BJP was polarizing society via UCC.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-43838″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/www.theindiaprint.com-agenda-driven-majoritarian-government-cannot-impose-the-uniform-civil-code-on-the-populace-says-chidambaram-p-chidambaram-11zon-750×450.jpg” alt=”” width=”1480″ height=”888″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/www.theindiaprint.com-agenda-driven-majoritarian-government-cannot-impose-the-uniform-civil-code-on-the-populace-says-chidambaram-p-chidambaram-11zon-750×450.jpg 750w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/www.theindiaprint.com-agenda-driven-majoritarian-government-cannot-impose-the-uniform-civil-code-on-the-populace-says-chidambaram-p-chidambaram-11zon-1024×614.jpg 1024w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/www.theindiaprint.com-agenda-driven-majoritarian-government-cannot-impose-the-uniform-civil-code-on-the-populace-says-chidambaram-p-chidambaram-11zon-768×461.jpg 768w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/www.theindiaprint.com-agenda-driven-majoritarian-government-cannot-impose-the-uniform-civil-code-on-the-populace-says-chidambaram-p-chidambaram-11zon-150×90.jpg 150w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/www.theindiaprint.com-agenda-driven-majoritarian-government-cannot-impose-the-uniform-civil-code-on-the-populace-says-chidambaram-p-chidambaram-11zon.jpg 1200w” sizes=”(max-width: 1480px) 100vw, 1480px” />

“The Hon’ble PM is portraying UCC as a straightforward procedure. He need to study the previous Law Commission’s report, which noted that it wasn’t practical at the time. The BJP’s rhetoric and actions are to blame for the nation’s division today. A UCC that is pushed on the populace would simply deepen the rifts, according to Chidambaram.

The top Congress leader remarked, “It cannot be forced on the people by an agenda-driven majoritarian government.” He noted that a uniform civil code is an ideal.

“The Hon’ble PM’s adamant support for UCC is meant to draw attention away from issues like inflation, unemployment, hate crimes, discrimination, and the denial of state’s rights. People need to exercise caution, he tweeted.

Chidambaram said that the BJP was using the UCC to polarize the voters in an effort to win the next elections since it had failed to practice effective governance.

“The Prime Minister compared a country to a family in advocating for UCC. Although his analogy may seem accurate in an abstract way, the reality is considerably different. The ties that bind a family are based on kinship. A Constitution, which is a political-legal instrument, unites a country.

There is variability even within families. According to him in the tweet, “The Indian Constitution recognized the variety and multiplicity of the Indian people.

Tuesday saw a major push for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), with Prime Minister Narendra Modi questioning how the nation can run with two sets of rules governing personal concerns. He also accused the opposition of exploiting the UCC debate to “mislead and provoke” the Muslim community.

The repeal of Article 370, which had granted Jammu and Kashmir special status, and the building of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya are the other two of the BJP’s three main election platforms.

The term “UCC” refers to a common body of rules that are applicable to all Indian residents, are not based on religion, and deal with a variety of personal issues, including marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.

On June 14, the Law Commission began a new consultation process on UCC by requesting opinions on the politically delicate matter from stakeholders, including the general public and recognized religious organizations.
