Report on Canada’s evacuation of its ambassadors from Delhi to Southeast Asia

According to a media source, Ottawa has allegedly removed its employees from its High Commission to Southeast Asia after New Delhi requested that Canada withdraw 41 of its 62 diplomats from India by October 10 in order to establish parity in the number of diplomatic staff in each nation.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-221225″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-report-on-canadas-evacuation-of-its-ambassadors-from-delhi-to-southeast-asia-image.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com report on canadas evacuation of its ambassadors from delhi to southeast asia image” width=”1237″ height=”788″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-report-on-canadas-evacuation-of-its-ambassadors-from-delhi-to-southeast-asia-image.jpg 281w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/theindiaprint.com-report-on-canadas-evacuation-of-its-ambassadors-from-delhi-to-southeast-asia-image-150×96.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1237px) 100vw, 1237px” title=”Report on Canada's evacuation of its ambassadors from Delhi to Southeast Asia 3″>

According to the CTV story, Canada has relocated the bulk of its diplomatic personnel from India to either Singapore or Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

However, there was no official statement on their departure from New Delhi.

The announcement comes after Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said on Tuesday that India’s government was the subject of diplomatic negotiations on staff reductions.

“We are in touch with the Indian government. Because we believe that private talks are preferable for diplomatic exchanges, we will continue to participate in them. We take the security of Canadian ambassadors extremely seriously.

India has requested that Canada remove its 41 diplomats from the nation by October 10 due to the deteriorating diplomatic relations. Their diplomatic immunity will be revoked if they don’t meet the deadline.

More than 60 Canadian diplomats are now stationed in India.

The External Affairs Ministry said on Thursday that parity in diplomatic presence had been sought.

Arindam Bagchi, a spokesman for the External Affairs Ministry, responded to a question about the matter by saying, “On discussions on parity, given the much higher presence of diplomats or diplomatic presence here and their interference in our internal matters, we have sought parity in our respective diplomatic presence.”

He said that talks are still going on to achieve parity.

“Given that Canadian diplomatic presence is higher, we would assume that there would be a reduction,” the man added.

The diplomatic ties between the two countries reached an all-time low last month when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested in Parliament that Indian intelligence personnel may have been involved in the death of Sikh pro-Khalistan hardliner Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

In response to Trudeau’s accusations, each country has expelled a diplomat.

India has also referred to Canada’s accusations as being “politically driven”.
