Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Union Commission, commended India for its progress in implementing Digital Public Infrastructures (DPI). “India has implemented its digital public infrastructures with impressive success.
DPIs, according to Leyen, may really help developing economies.

Leyen said that she was in favor of the steps that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had done. “We listened to the prime minister, and we strongly endorse his plan. The challenge is to create interoperable, trustworthy, and open public digital infrastructure because the potential is enormous, Leyen said.

According to a World Bank study published this month, India has used DPI to reach financial inclusion goals in six years, compared to an estimated 47 long years without it.

“Without a DPI strategy, it (the India stack) would have taken close to five decades to attain a phenomenal 80% financial inclusion rate. According to the paper, the adoption of DPIs like Aadhaar, coupled with Jan Dhan bank accounts and mobile phones, is thought to have been a key factor in the increase in adult ownership of transaction accounts from around one-fourth in 2008 to over eighty percent now.

Leyen also spoke on the difficulties presented by artificial intelligence (AI), noting that despite its enormous advantages, it also carries certain drawbacks. She emphasized the need for political leaders to control the use of the quickly advancing technology coming from those who create AI.

“AI carries dangers but also presents enormous potential. The key concern is how to take advantage of a technology that is developing quickly. That even the creators and developers of AI are urging political authorities to control is noteworthy, according to Leyen.

“One thing is obvious: digital technology will rule the future. While fostering innovation, we also aim to foster trust. But more is required. Our future will be shaped by what the world does now, she remarked.

According to Leyen, a new international framework for AI risks has to be created by Europe and its allies in order to “foster investments in safe and responsible AI systems” and to assist the globe protect “against systemic societal risks.”

Regarding Ukraine, Leyen said that no country has voiced unhappiness at the country’s exclusion from the G20 summit in New Delhi. He also avoided drawing comparisons between the IMEE EC and China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
