Zahoor Ahmed Bhat, a political science instructor at Government Higher Secondary School, Jawahar Nagar in Srinagar, was placed on administrative leave and suspended on August 25 “for violation of provisions of J&K CSR, Jammu and Kashmir Government Employees (Conduct) Rules 1971, and J&K Leave Rules”.

This occurred the day after he appeared in person before the Supreme Court as a petitioner in a case involving the repeal of Article 370, which granted the former state of Jammu and Kashmir a unique status and was repealed by the Central Government on August 5, 2019.

According to a formal order issued by Vikas Dhar Bhagati, Personnel Officer, Directorate of School Education, Jammu, Zahoor Ahmed Bhat, senior lecturer in political science, is hereby discharged from his position as a result of the withdrawal of order number 251-JK (Edu) of August 25 (Order of suspension and subsequent attachment to Jammu).

Bhat was instructed to report to his old place of employment for additional responsibilities.

On August 28, the Supreme Court requested that the investigation of Bhat’s suspension be conducted by Attorney General R Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.

As soon as the hearing started, senior attorneys Rajeev Dhavan and Kapil Sibal informed the five-judge Constitution Bench presided over by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud that Bhat had been fired from his position by the Jammu and Kashmir government for his arguments before the supreme court.

“This must not occur. Someone who challenges this court will be dismissed,” the bench had stated.
