In response to a public interest lawsuit (PIL) seeking suo moto criminal contempt proceedings against him for his comments on “corruption” in the judiciary, the Rajasthan High Court has sent Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot a show-cause notice.

Shivcharan Gupta, a local attorney, filed the lawsuit on Thursday in response to Gehlot’s remarks claiming corruption in the country’s court.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-158802″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/theindiaprint.com-nysa-devgn-attends-parties-with-her-best-friend-orry-and-dresses-coolly-in-a-crop-top-and-shorts-download-2023-09-03t181607.974.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com nysa devgn attends parties with her best friend orry and dresses coolly in a crop top and shorts download 2023 09 03t181607.974″ width=”1155″ height=”647″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/theindiaprint.com-nysa-devgn-attends-parties-with-her-best-friend-orry-and-dresses-coolly-in-a-crop-top-and-shorts-download-2023-09-03t181607.974.jpg 300w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/theindiaprint.com-nysa-devgn-attends-parties-with-her-best-friend-orry-and-dresses-coolly-in-a-crop-top-and-shorts-download-2023-09-03t181607.974-150×84.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1155px) 100vw, 1155px” title=”As the HC issues a show-cause notice, Ashok Gehlot is in legal trouble for his remark on "corruption in the judiciary" 18″>

After hearing the case on Saturday, a division bench presided over by Justices MM Shrivastava and Ashutosh Kumar sent Gehlot a notice requesting a response within three weeks.

The Court was quoted in the order by Bar and Bench as saying that the statement’s contents, if made by the respondent (Gehlot), “prima facie make out a case that it tends to scandalize the Courts because it does not refer to any particular case or category of cases, but is general in nature against the judiciary as a whole.”

The Chief Minister said that corruption is pervasive in the courts today while speaking to media in Jaipur on Wednesday. I’ve heard that some attorneys personally accept the decision and declare it in writing.

Congressman Gehlot subsequently stressed, however, that what he had stated was not his own perspective and that he has always respected and believed in the courts after receiving backlash.

Due to attorneys’ one-day strike over Gehlot’s comments on Friday, both the high court and the subordinate courts in Jodhpur experienced delays in operations.

Lawyers in Jodhpur, where the main bench of the Rajasthan High Court is headquartered, planned a daylong walkout across all courts after being offended by the comments.

Nearly 10,000 attorneys in Jodhpur, according to Ravi Bhansali, president of the Rajasthan High Court Lawyers Association, have all voluntarily stopped working. He had remarked, “The chief minister made a derogatory remark against the judiciary and advocates are not working today as a day of symbolic protest.”
