Maria Sakkari is bothered by the smell of marijuana as she loses in the first round of the US Open

Maria Sakkari was troubled by the scent of something off the court even while she was rolling on it.

It was marijuana, Sakkari stated.

The No. 8 seed from Greece lost to Rebeka Masarova 6-4, 6-4 on Monday, knocking her out of the U.S. Open. The match seemed to be going her way until she made a comment about the scent to the chair umpire during a changeover.

At the time, Sakkari was winning the opening set on Court 17 4-1.

Oh my god, the fragrance, Sakkari said.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-152239″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-download-61-9.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com download 61 9″ width=”1307″ height=”870″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-download-61-9.jpg 275w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-download-61-9-150×100.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1307px) 100vw, 1307px” title=”Maria Sakkari is bothered by the smell of marijuana as she loses in the first round of the US Open 3″>

“I believe it came from the park,”

The U.S. Open semifinalist Sakkari stated the scent of marijuana didn’t bother her when she was playing. She had previously seen it Sunday during practice on the same court.

You don’t really consider it since your only concern is winning the game, Sakkari added. “I detected a scent, but that was all. I mean, I didn’t really pay attention to it.

Last year, Nick Kyrgios expressed his displeasure with smelling marijuana during a game, claiming that because he suffers from asthma, the fragrance certainly wasn’t ideal for him to breathe as he was moving around.

However, Sakkari said that it didn’t interfere with her performance as she made her third consecutive first-round elimination from a Grand Slam competition.

Sakkari stated, “There are times when you smell food, times when you smell cigarettes, and times when you smell weed.”

“I mean, because we’re in an open area, we have no control over it. A park is behind you. Anyone is free to act whatever they like.
