Changes in China’s Covid Policy Are Responsible for 2 Million More Deaths, a US Study Finds

According to a recent U.S. research, China’s hasty decision to abandon its stringent control of the COVID virus, which exposed its 1.4 billion citizens to it, might have caused an additional 2 million fatalities in the subsequent two months.

The Seattle-based Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center’s research was based on an internet search and a sample of mortality data that was released by various Chinese institutions. Between December 2022 and January 2023, it was discovered that there were an estimated 1.87 million more fatalities among adults over 30 from all causes, with the exception of Tibet.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-145824″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-10-year-old-mumbai-boy-calls-bomb-threat-police-say-false-alarm-bomb-planted-in-flight-download-2023-08-25t180432.314.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com 10 year old mumbai boy calls bomb threat police say false alarm bomb planted in flight download 2023 08 25t180432.314″ width=”1198″ height=”763″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-10-year-old-mumbai-boy-calls-bomb-threat-police-say-false-alarm-bomb-planted-in-flight-download-2023-08-25t180432.314.jpg 281w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-10-year-old-mumbai-boy-calls-bomb-threat-police-say-false-alarm-bomb-planted-in-flight-download-2023-08-25t180432.314-150×96.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1198px) 100vw, 1198px” title=”Changes in China's Covid Policy Are Responsible for 2 Million More Deaths, a US Study Finds 3″>

Health experts claim that once China decided to halt its three-year zero-covid policy in December of last year, there was a dramatic rise in hospital admissions and fatalities that the government mostly failed to publish. The program had included widespread testing and strict and prolonged lockdowns during quarantines. According to the research, which was published on Thursday in JAMA Network Open, the actual fatalities greatly outnumbered the official Chinese government estimates from January that 60,000 persons with COVID had passed away in hospitals since the zero-COVID policy was abandoned a month earlier.

In the study, researchers used data from searches on Baidu, a well-known Chinese internet search engine, as well as information from published obituaries to undertake statistical analysis. “Our research of extra fatalities associated with China’s removal of the zero-covid policy establishes a baseline estimate determined experimentally.

These results are crucial for comprehending how quick spread of a disease may affect population mortality, according to experts.

A request for comment on the story was not immediately answered by China’s National Health Commission. Global health experts urged China to provide more information on a number of occasions as stories of growing hospitalizations and fatalities began to circulate, particularly as the danger of new variations gained attention.

At the end of 2022, China ceased releasing official daily death statistics. In China, there have reportedly been 121,628 COVID fatalities, out of a total of over 7 million worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. In an unusual move, one Chinese province temporarily posted information on its website in July indicating a 70% increase in cremations in the first quarter of this year.

China’s senior officials hailed a “decisive victory” against covid in February.

However, the virus is still spreading across the nation, and on Thursday, according to Chinese state media, Beijing health authorities stated covid is still the top infectious illness in the city.

The current dominating strain in China, according to officials, is a novel Omicron variation known as EG.5, also known as “Eris” after the Greek Goddess of conflict and discord.

The Global Times said that according to the National Bureau of Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of the new variety EG.5 grew from 0.6% in April to 71.6% in August, becoming the predominant strain across the majority of provinces in China.
