He added in a statement to the media after meetings with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens that the two nations would not only enhance economic collaboration in the sphere of defense and security but also military connections.

Modi called India and Greece a “natural match” and noted that the two nations’ relationships have a long and solid history. “Greece and India are a logical fit between two legendary civilizations, two legendary democratic principles, and two legendary commerce and cultural ties. Our friendship has a long history and a solid basis, he remarked.

He said that the fight against terrorism was another area of concern for all parties. The two nations will institutionalize communication between their National Security Advisors (NSAs) as part of it.

Modi said that India and Greece support diplomacy and communication to settle the Ukraine situation.

The Greek leader said that both parties are prepared to go ahead to address numerous difficulties, “especially in a period of upheaval and war in Ukraine”.

According to him, “our relations have significantly improved over the past few years, and there is room for a very broad range of bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, defense, culture, and tourism.” He said, “Our first goal is to double our bilateral trade.”

Since Indira Gandhi’s 1983 trip, there had been 40 years since any Indian prime minister visited Greece, according to Modi. “An Indian Prime Minister has visited Greece after a 40-year hiatus. The depth and warmth of our relationships have not diminished, however. Therefore, I have decided to elevate India-Greece ties to a strategic level with the (Greek) PM, PM Modi remarked.

According to a joint statement released by the two leaders following their talks, they shared a vision for the Mediterranean Sea and the Indo-Pacific region that was free, open, and governed by the law of the sea, particularly the provisions of the UNCLOS, and that fully respected each country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and freedom of navigation for the benefit of global peace, stability, and security.

The presidents also ordered that both sides aim to quadruple bilateral trade by 2030 in recognition of the recent growth in bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

The two presidents agreed that an early conclusion of a Mobility and Migration Partnership Agreement (MMPA) would be advantageous to both parties and make it easier for workers to travel freely between the two nations.
