He told a high-level inter-ministerial conference last night that paddy stubble burning was not only about pollution in Delhi and its surrounding regions. It was having a negative impact on farmland by reducing the soil’s health and fertility.

“As a result, our efforts must be directed both toward combating air pollution in Delhi and toward protecting soil health, thereby safeguarding the ultimate interests of our farmers,” he said.

The conference, co-chaired by Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, examined the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and the National Capital Territory of Delhi’s readiness to avoid rice stubble burning during the current season. Ministers and top officials from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi attended the conference.

The states presented their action plans and strategies for reducing stubble fire during the current season at the conference. States were advised to use crop residue management funds, make crop residue management (CRM) machinery available well before harvesting season, and conduct Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities in collaboration with ICAR and other stakeholders to raise farmer awareness about paddy stubble burning.

Speaking on the occasion, the environment minister remarked that efforts to reduce paddy stubble burning had shown positive results over the previous five years. Burning incidents in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and the National Capital Territory of Delhi have decreased as a result of the combined efforts of authorities such as the Commission for Air Quality Management.

The agricultural minister commended all stakeholders for their commitment to solving the problem of paddy stubble burning. He saw that, thanks to the efforts of all parties, the number of paddy stubble fire incidents was steadily decreasing.

However, paddy stubble burning was not just associated with the pollution of Delhi and its surrounding regions. It was also having a negative impact on farmland by reducing the soil’s health and fertility. “As a result, our efforts must be directed both toward combating air pollution in Delhi and toward protecting soil health, thereby safeguarding the ultimate interests of our farmers,” he said.
