Amid a diplomatic spat with the US, the Chinese government demands that a leader of Hong Kong be included at an economic conference

The Chinese government insisted that the US invite John Lee, the chief executive of Hong Kong, to an upcoming economic summit, which escalated tensions between the two countries on Friday. The request was made in reaction to a news story that said Lee would not be allowed to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit because of his alleged role in repressing Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-100436″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-amid-a-diplomatic-spat-with-the-us-the-chinese-government-demands-that-a-leader-of-hong-kong-be-included-at-an-economic-conference-im-668426-750×750.jpg” alt=”” width=”1651″ height=”1651″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-amid-a-diplomatic-spat-with-the-us-the-chinese-government-demands-that-a-leader-of-hong-kong-be-included-at-an-economic-conference-im-668426-750×750.jpg 750w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-amid-a-diplomatic-spat-with-the-us-the-chinese-government-demands-that-a-leader-of-hong-kong-be-included-at-an-economic-conference-im-668426-1024×1024.jpg 1024w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-amid-a-diplomatic-spat-with-the-us-the-chinese-government-demands-that-a-leader-of-hong-kong-be-included-at-an-economic-conference-im-668426-500×500.jpg 500w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-amid-a-diplomatic-spat-with-the-us-the-chinese-government-demands-that-a-leader-of-hong-kong-be-included-at-an-economic-conference-im-668426-768×768.jpg 768w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-amid-a-diplomatic-spat-with-the-us-the-chinese-government-demands-that-a-leader-of-hong-kong-be-included-at-an-economic-conference-im-668426-96×96.jpg 96w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-amid-a-diplomatic-spat-with-the-us-the-chinese-government-demands-that-a-leader-of-hong-kong-be-included-at-an-economic-conference-im-668426-150×150.jpg 150w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-amid-a-diplomatic-spat-with-the-us-the-chinese-government-demands-that-a-leader-of-hong-kong-be-included-at-an-economic-conference-im-668426.jpg 1280w” sizes=”(max-width: 1651px) 100vw, 1651px” />

According to the AP, Lee’s likely exclusion from the meeting threatens to impede Washington’s attempts to improve ties with China, which have deteriorated to their worst point in decades as a result of disagreements over security, technology, human rights, and other thorny topics.

According to unidentified US sources quoted by The Washington Post, Lee might be barred from the APEC summit in San Francisco in November as a result of sanctions put in place against him in 2020. Before taking the position of chief executive last year, Lee was reportedly implicated in the government’s crackdown on pro-democracy activists as the previous senior police officer in Hong Kong.

After the former British colony was returned to China in 1997, the United States and a number of other nations accused Beijing of breaking its commitments to provide Hong Kong autonomy and human rights akin to those found in the West.

China’s foreign ministry urged that the US halt the “illegal and unreasonable” penalties on Lee and denounced them as “bullying” that goes against international law and jeopardizes cooperation in the regional forum.

China said that such conferences shouldn’t be vulnerable to political exclusion based on unilateral judgments and pressed the US to reverse course and invite Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu to the APEC summit.

Contested topics including US support for Taiwan’s democracy have been major causes of conflict even though Washington has been actively participating in diplomatic missions to reopen communication with China. However, there have been no signs that China is prepared to adjust its economic, geopolitical, or other policies that have produced conflict with the US and its Asian neighbors and commercial partners. Chinese officials have demanded concessions, including changes in how the US deals with Taiwan.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping stressed the need for both sides to make choices that nurture stable relations and promote shared success and development at a recent meeting with former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

The admission of Hong Kong’s leader in the APEC conference is still a sensitive topic that may have wider ramifications for regional cooperation and diplomatic dynamics as US-China ties remain tense.
