Thousands demonstrate against the violence in Manipur across Mizoram, and the chief minister joins them

On Tuesday, thousands of people participated in rallies around Mizoram to show their support for the Zo people of ethnically divided Manipur.

The protests were held in several locations around the state, including the capital Aizawl, and were organized by the NGO Coordination Committee, a coalition of five significant civil society organizations, including the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) and Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP).<img decoding=”async” loading=”lazy” class=”alignnone wp-image-94663″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-to-compete-with-samsung-and-moto-sony-may-release-the-xperia-flip-phone-soon-mizoram-11zon-750×417.png” alt=”” width=”1478″ height=”822″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-to-compete-with-samsung-and-moto-sony-may-release-the-xperia-flip-phone-soon-mizoram-11zon-750×417.png 750w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-to-compete-with-samsung-and-moto-sony-may-release-the-xperia-flip-phone-soon-mizoram-11zon-1024×569.png 1024w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-to-compete-with-samsung-and-moto-sony-may-release-the-xperia-flip-phone-soon-mizoram-11zon-768×427.png 768w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-to-compete-with-samsung-and-moto-sony-may-release-the-xperia-flip-phone-soon-mizoram-11zon-150×83.png 150w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-to-compete-with-samsung-and-moto-sony-may-release-the-xperia-flip-phone-soon-mizoram-11zon.png 1200w” sizes=”(max-width: 1478px) 100vw, 1478px” />

Across party lines, state officials and MLAs participated in the sizable protest march in Aizawl, including the chief minister Zoramthanga, the deputy chief minister Tawnluia, and others.

With signs and banners condemning the violence in the neighboring state, thousands of regular citizens joined them in the peaceful demonstration.

As a result of the size of the gathering, Aizawl came to a complete stop. According to participants, the state has not recently witnessed a protest this size.

The governing MNF’s offices were shut down to show support for the initiative. In support of the demonstrations of unity, the opposition BJP, Congress, and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) also closed their offices.

Chairman of the NGO Coordination Committee R Lalngheta pleaded with the Centre to put a stop to the violence in Manipur from the rally.

“India should take immediate action to address the sufferings of the Zo people in Manipur,” he added. “If India considers us to be Indian.”

The demonstrators also passed motions calling on the Center to provide compensation for those hurt in the racial conflict and to prosecute those responsible for strip-teasing the two ladies harshly.

The Mizo people of Mizoram are related to the Kuki people of Manipur, the Kuki-Chin people of Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts, and the Chin people of Myanmar. They are referred to as Zos as a group.

Due to the protests, security was increased across Mizoram.

According to authorities, there was a significant police presence, patrols, and careful surveillance in every district, particularly in the more susceptible ones, to avoid any unfortunate incidents.

A viral video from May 4 of two women being paraded nude by a crowd in Manipur brought the state back into the national spotlight after almost three months of unrest there resulted in over 160 deaths and hundreds of injuries.

On May 3, when the hill districts organized a “Tribal Solidarity March” to oppose the Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, violence broke out.

Tribals, who include the Nagas and Kukis, make up 40% of Manipur’s population and are mostly concentrated in the hill regions, whereas Meiteis make up around 53% of the state’s population and dwell primarily in the Imphal Valley.
