Manipur Women Case: Center Requests That Videos Not Be Shared on Twitter and Other Platforms

The Centre issued a directive to Twitter and other social media sites instructing them not to post the footage after a significant outrage on the May 4 video showing two women in Manipur being paraded in their underwear. The footage was captured on May 4, a day after ethnic conflicts between the Meitei and Kuki groups broke out in the state, and it showed men from one community parading two nude women from another rival community in the Kangpokpi area.

In its instructions, the government made clear that it was crucial to abide by Indian law while the case was being looked at.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-85920″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-prabhas-debuts-in-public-for-the-first-time-after-the-failure-of-adipurush-and-debuts-project-k-at-comic-con-in-the-us-images-2023-07-20t165815.256.jpg” alt=”” width=”1370″ height=”767″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-prabhas-debuts-in-public-for-the-first-time-after-the-failure-of-adipurush-and-debuts-project-k-at-comic-con-in-the-us-images-2023-07-20t165815.256.jpg 300w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-prabhas-debuts-in-public-for-the-first-time-after-the-failure-of-adipurush-and-debuts-project-k-at-comic-con-in-the-us-images-2023-07-20t165815.256-150×84.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1370px) 100vw, 1370px” />

Imphal officials said that the video appeared online on the eve of a planned protest march that the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) had organised on Thursday to draw attention to their predicament.

The males allegedly gang-raped the women in the video, forced them to undress, and then displayed them in public.

One of the casualties was a 19-year-old whose brother was slain by the crowd when he attempted to intercede, according to a story in India Today.

Khuyrum Heradas, one of the principal suspects, was reportedly detained in Thoubal area on Thursday morning, according to the police.

The incident in the Kangpokpi district was reported in a FIR that was filed in the Thoubal district on June 21. It occurred on May 4. Unknown persons are accused of murder, gang rape, and kidnapping.

According to the FIR, “all three women were physically forced to take off their clothing and were stripped naked in front of the mob.”

N Biren Singh, the chief minister of Manipur, responded to the video on Wednesday by labeling it a “crime against humanity”. Speaking to CNN-News18, he said, “It is a crime against humanity, and if proven to be true, the state administration would stop at nothing to find the perpetrators and execute them. It is a horrific act, and I strongly condemn it.
