US: Suspect is still at large after one fatal and four injured shooting in Atlanta

During a manhunt for the 24-year-old suspect in Atlanta's busy midtown district on Wednesday, police said a man opened fire inside the waiting room of a medical institution, killing one lady and injured four others.

Police were summoned to the Northside Medical facility on West Peachtree Street just after noon in a business district featuring office buildings and high-rise residences.

According to Atlanta police, Deion Patterson is thought to be the shooter and is armed and dangerous. When Patterson's whereabouts were unknown, authorities released a photo of him and urged anyone with information to call 911 instead of going up to him.

Reporters were informed by Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum that a 39-year-old woman was declared deceased at the site. Also female, the injured victims were 25, 39, 56, and 71 years old.

Four of them “are fighting for their lives at Grady Hospital,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens stated during a press conference.

Police said that they thought Patterson had departed the area four hours after the incident. Despite lifting the shelter-in-place warning, they asked people to avoid the area because of the ongoing investigation.

Schierbaum said that the search was quite vigorous. We are investigating reliable leads that are now circulating throughout Cobb County and here in the city.

According to Atlanta police, they are aware of a carjacking that took place shortly after the nearby gunshot. According to them, the car was found in the suburb of Cobb County, and they were investigating if it had anything to do with the incident.

Patterson's family is “being cooperative” with detectives, according to Schierbaum.

The U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement that Patterson joined the organization in 2018 and was relieved of duty in January. At the time, he was a second-class electrician's mate.

A reward of up to $10,000 was being offered by Crime Stoppers for information that resulted in the suspect's capture and indictment.

The shooting occurs in 2023, a year that has seen a spike in gun violence and mass shootings in American cities.

Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia spoke on the Senate floor shortly after the massacre to condemn gun violence and urge his colleagues to pursue gun control.

In a 12-minute address, Warnock added, “There have been so many mass shootings that tragically, we act as if this is routine.” “We act as though this is commonplace. It's not right.

In addition, the pastor from Atlanta said: “I shudder to say it, but the truth is, in a real sense, it's only a matter of time that this kind of tragedy comes knocking on your door.”
